Sweden: railfreight traffic flourishes in 2018

Around 398,000 teu were transported by rail to/from the port of Gothenburg (Sweden) in 2018. The number of rail containers shipped to/from the port rose by 13%, compared to 2017. The increase actually surged to 27% in Q4/2018.

That improvement can be compared with the downturn in volumes during the industrial dispute at the container terminal in 2017. Since then, throughput has recovered steadily – starting with short-distance road haulage and followed by long-distance rail transport.

The port line is being upgraded into a double-track system. Several sections have already been completed. Phase 3 of the conversion is due to go into service in 2019. (ben)
