South Europeans back in Antarctica
One year after performing a world first, Hi Fly is back in Antarctica. Since 2 November it has operated an Airbus A340 9H-TQZ between Cape Town (South Africa) and Wolf’s Fang runway {at 71º 32’ 00” S; 8º 50’ 00” E}. The journey is 2,500 nm long, and takes just over five hours each way. The aircraft will be used to fly essential cargo, scientists and a small number of tourists to the 'White Continent' this season .
In 2021 Hi Fly carried out a historical flight, landing the first ever Airbus widebody in Antarctica, under the command of Captain Carlos Mirpuri, the vice-president and co-founder of Hi Fly. It is a fully licensed and certified airline with two air operator certificates, one issued by Portugal's ANAC and the other ony by Malta's TM-CAD. (ah)
