SC Ports breaks Wando Welch terminal record
The port of Charleston has set a record with the arrival of the ‘OOCL Iris’, the largest vessel ever to call at its Wando Welch terminal. The 16,828 teu ship surpassed the previous record held by the ‘CMA CGM Marco Polo’ (16,022 teu).
The ‘OOCL Iris’ will operate on the ‘Trans-Pacific East Coast Express’ service, strengthening links between Asia and the US East Coast. With a 52 ft harbour, SC Ports can accommodate mega-containerships at any tide, improving efficiency for cargo owners, as the company stated.
SC Ports is nearing completion of a key berth-deepening project, and is investing USD 3 billion in its infrastructure. “SC Ports’ strategic infrastructure investments allow us to continue welcoming the largest ships calling on the US East Coast,” its CEO Barbara Melvin said. (js)
