Road and rail equally hit by corona crisis
Freight traffic crossing the Swiss Alps decreased significantly in H1/2020 due to the corona pandemic. Both the number of truck journeys and railfreight transports dropped by around 12%.
The rail's share in the total volume of transalpine freight traffic remains unchanged at 71%, the Swiss federal office of transport (FOT) reported.
As the FOT's most recent survey shows, the volume of transalpine transports began to show a sharp decline as from mid-March, particularly in the Italian trade. After a hesitant recovery in May and June, road and rail transports at least rose to prior-year levels in the second half of June. (ben)
