Revitalise cargo at Barcelona El Prat

The Spanish forwarders’ federation Feteia-Oltra and a Catalan transport users’ council (Consell d'usuaris del transport de Catalunya) have held a meeting to discuss the situation of airfreight transport at Barcelona El Prat airport. The meeting highlighted the need to adopt initiatives to revitalise the sector, starting with an airport model to be proposed for El Prat.

The organisations will set up a working group to establish a model for the development of the airport and a focus on cargo, since a consistent fall in cargo activity has been noted in the gateway.

The lack of commitment to cargo by the authorities concerned has been identified as a general problem throughout Spain. The following issues are amongst those that have been identified as requiring improvement.
- transit times for goods
- adequate runways
- more space for freighters
- implementing facility upgrades and
- staffing to streamline customs operations.
