Retrofitted H2 loco to be trialled in 2024/25

Irish Rail Iarnrod Eireann (IE) and Digas have signed a contract to retrofit a freight diesel locomotive from diesel fuel to hydrogen (H2). The EUR 1.5 million project will help decarbonise the operations of IE diesel locomotives.

Under the agreement, IE will provide the 071 Class diesel locomotive for the conversion as well as make the workshop available for installation, testing and commissioning. Digas will install a hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2 ICE) retrofit kit to convert the unit from diesel to hydrogen power.

The project will be tested in two phases between 2024 and 2025. It is financed by IE and Digas, with additional funding from EIT Urban Mobility. (ben)
