Rail bundling cuts costs for shippers
Railport and the port of Antwerp-Bruges have reported positive results from their rail bundling initiative for single wagon load (SWL) transports in the Antwerp port area, launched in January 2024. The system streamlines first/last mile transport by coordinating wagon movements at a unified price. This lowers the costs for freight payers and simplifies operations for terminals that now have a single point of contact for rail transports.
Digitalisation is the next focus, aiming to enhance real-time tracking and coordination of rail wagons for improved efficiency and safety. Significant rail infrastructure investments, such as doubling and electrifying Line 11, are planned to support growing demand and minimise disruptions during construction. (pb)
