Rail Baltica hub opened

The Kaunas Intermodal Terminal (KIT) in Lithuania is now in operation. When all works and formalities on the Rail Baltica railway section between Kaunas and Palemonas have been completed, the new hub will be the most north-eastern point of the European railway system that can be reached by European standard rolling stock.

However, since the infrastructure on the 120 km long rail section between the Kaunas and the Lithuanian/Polish border has already been adapted to the parameters of the Rail Baltica project, the section is open for freight traffic even before the entire project has been completed.

The first train, loaded with containers and semi-trailers, recently arrived at the KIT by the European standard-gauge railway. There are two gauges in operation on the Lithuanian railway network (1,520 mm and 1,435 mm). (ben)
