Preferring sea freight to road traffic

It is now one year ago that Hansa Destinations launched its new shipping service between Nynäshamn and Rostock. The Visby-based shipping company Gotlandsbolaget’s investment in shipping between the continent and the Stockholm region is intended to reduce pressure on Sweden's road network and reduce emissions by transferring freight traffic from land to sea.

In May 2022, the service was expanded with daily departures. So far, the switch of freight traffic from road to sea has been slower than Gotlandsbolaget, founded in 1865, had hoped.

“We’re working to get more people to invest in a solution that reduces emissions and at the same time relieves pressure on the road network,” says Håkan Johansson, CEO of Gotlandsbolaget. The crossing between Nynäshamn and Rostock currently takes 18 hours. (sh)
