Parcel handling hub in Mannheim in operation

After a ten month construction period, the parcel services provider GLS has put its location in Mannheim (Germany) into operation. The centrepiece of the 10,000 sqm sorting hall is the state-of-the art parcel sorting system.

Thanks to the carefully balanced interaction of 30 loading and 15 unloading gates and a yard area of about 30,000 sqm, the system enables a seamless handling of about 80,000 parcels per day - double as many as in the previous warehouse - and is ready for action for the coming peak season.

As from 4 November GLS will initiate a regional cargo handling hub for its warehouses in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, as well as parts of Hesse, Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg. Parcels travelling between these warehouses will then be exchanged in Mannheim instead of GLS’ central cargo handling hub in Neuenstein.

This saves time and shortens truck journeys, which also protects the climate. Furthermore, electric vehicles will soon be deployed for deliveries from the Mannheim hub. To begin with, four quick charging stations have been installed at the hub to supply them with electricity. (mw)
