Overcoming bottlenecks on the Rhine

As a vital European waterway, the Rhine moves 60 million t of cargo on 50,000 ships per year. Its potential is however limited by a bottleneck between Budenheim and St. Goar, forcing ships to carry lighter loads on many days.

To address this issue, an acceleration commission was formed in 2022, recommending actions for faster progress. The commission focuses on personnel, organisation, acceptance, communication, and planning processes, favouring short-term acceleration measures to optimise project management and overcome bottlenecks.

The recommendations were presented to Germany’s transport minister Volker Wissing, who emphasised the importance of the Rhine for both the economy and the environment. (pb)
