Nigeria extends hinterland rail services

A new container train was launched recently by the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NCR) and APM Terminals (APMT), linking Apapa Port in Nigeria’s capital Lagos with the Moniya freight yard in Ibadan, in the federal state of Oyo.

The service will run thrice weekly with a fixed timetable and will thus enhance import and export activities, according to the government. NRC and APMT have a long history of doing business together, shifting container traffic to places in the hinterland of Nigeria, including Kaduna and Kano, mainly on narrow-gauge lines.

Container traffic movement by rail on the standard gauge in Ibadan started in September 2023, with a single ‘transitional line’. There are plans to build two additional lines in future. (ben)
