New life across the Rhine

Birsterminal, an independent and owner-managed cargo handling company on the Rhine in Birsfelden near Basel (Switzerland), which has been in operation for over 80 years, lives sustainability.

Its "i-Log" industrial and logistics park is currently being built in the port of Birsfelden, the centrepiece of which is a former Roche excavation hall on the opposite bank of the Rhine in Grenzach-Wyhlen in Germany. It was dismantled and shipped across the Rhine in an ecologically optimal way, by avoiding pollution caused by road transport.

In a first step, about 10,000 sqm of the original 19,000 sqm hall will be rebuilt and put to a new use. Birsterminal will continue implementing its energy strategy next year and equip the roofs of its new storage areas with a highly efficient photovoltaic system. It already operates one of the largest solar plants in the region. (ah)
