New dual-fuel ship joins Maersk’s fleet

Maersk has officially named its ninth dual-fuel methanol vessel, “A.P. Møller,” during a ceremony in Singapore, marking its maiden voyage from Asia to Europe. This vessel, with a capacity of 16,592 teu, is part of a larger fleet of 18 methanol-powered ships scheduled for delivery in 2024 and 2025, supporting Maersk's decarbonisation goals.

Built at Hyundai Heavy Industries, “A.P. Møller” reflects current advancements in sustainable shipping and underscores Maersk's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The event also reaffirmed Singapore’s role as a hub for alternative maritime fuels, following successful methanol bunkering initiatives in 2023.

The fleet is a key element in Maersk's strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, with methanol reducing GHG emissions by at least 65% compared to traditional fuels. Maersk continues urging the International Maritime Organisation to adopt policies to incentivise the transition to greener shipping fuels. (pb)
