Malaysia's east coast rail project goes ahead

The first batch of six CRRC-made diesel locomotives recently completed tests at the Kuantan tracking laying base in Malaysia. They are now ready to transport materials for laying the track of Malaysia’s East Coast Railway project (ECRL).

The construction of the 665 km line is expected to be completed by 2026. It is defined as a “road bridge” connecting the country’s east and west coast. The six diesel locomotives will be used for the construction and are the key equipment for the track laying work.

The uses AC-DC electric transmission and fits into the 1,435 mm standard gauge. It is 22 m long, and has a curb weight of 150 t and a maximum operating speed of 100 km/h. (ben)
