London Gateway to get tallest cranes in Europe

DP World has announced a GBP 1 billion expansion of London Gateway, aiming to make it the largest container port in the UK within five years. It will add two new shipping berths, bringing the total to six, and a second rail terminal to accommodate increased trade.

By the end of the decade, the port will be able to handle six of the world’s largest container ships simultaneously, with quayside cranes towering as high as Big Ben. The project will create 400 new jobs, adding to the current workforce of 1,200.

The investment is part of DP World's broader GBP 3 billion commitment to transforming the former oil refinery site into a major logistics hub. The expansion follows the recent opening of a GBP 350 million fourth berth powered entirely by electricity.

Located in the Thames Estuary, London Gateway also hosts Europe’s largest logistics park, employing 1,500 workers, and offering storage, warehousing, and distribution services. DP World’s investment aims to enhance the UK's supply chain resilience and strengthen trade connections with global markets. The construction project is subject to planning and regulatory approvals.
