IMO and Saudi Arabia launch project for seafarers
The International Maritime Organization and Saudi Arabia have launched the ‘NextWave Seafarers Project’, aiming to tackle the global seafarer shortage while creating career opportunities for cadets from less-developed countries and small island developing states.
Running from 2025 to 2026, the initiative will provide 20 cadets with one year of on-board training through Bahri Shipping Line. “The future of the global shipping industry depends on its people, and this initiative has the potential to transform maritime careers for young seafarers worldwide,” said IMO secretary-general Arsenio Dominguez.
The project seeks to establish a training framework, address barriers, promote gender diversity and encourage global participation from IMO member states and shipping lines to strengthen the maritime workforce. (js)
