ICS: latest flag state insights

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has released its 2023/2024 Shipping Industry Flag State Performance Table. The report indicates an overall improvement in the performance of flag states, which are essential for upholding safety and environmental standards in maritime shipping.

Smaller flag states like Costa Rica, Egypt, Mexico, and Thailand show positive developments. However, for some other flag states, including Togo, Algeria, and Comoros, the performance indicators are significantly negative, highlighting the need for a thorough evaluation by shipowners and operators.

The ICS report aims to encourage dialogue and improvement in safety, environmental protection, and seafarers' working conditions.

In a press release, Guy Platten, secretary general of ICS, stressed the importance of the table as a tool for the industry to identify and address areas of underperformance. He urged the use of this resource to influence improvements, especially in safety and environmental standards, during a time of heightened uncertainty in the shipping industry. (pb)
