Hamburg attracts more containers
Better than expected: container throughput in Port of Hamburg showed a positive trend in H1/2022. 4.4 million teu were handled, about 1% more than in H1/2021.
In the first six months of 2022, 117 ultra large container ships (ULCS) took advantage of the navigational channel adjustment that was completed in January this year. Yet, total throughput in Germany’s biggest port shrank by 2.7% to 61.8 million t, mainly due to a decline in bulk cargo handling.
Axel Mattern, CEO of Port Hamburg marketing, pointed out that both the war in Ukraine and the repercussions of the global corona pandemic continue to cause bottlenecks in transport and supply for trade and industry. The almost complete cessation of container and bulk transport with Russian ports due to international sanctions has left its mark.
In hinterland traffic, railfreight transport carries 52.8% of Hamburg’s incoming and departing traffic in the modal split. With regards to infrastructure, construction of shore power supply stations for container ships at the three container terminals Burchardkai, Tollerort und Eurogate began in H1/2022.
Trial operation is due to commence in 2023. Compared to its competitors, Hamburg's success in container throughput is a gain, since other major ports of the European North range like Rotterdam and Bremen/Bremerhaven witnessed downturns in container handling. (sh)
