Green policy in the Ports of Auckland
In the Ports of Auckland, the hitherto largest soil-based vertical garden has been installed on its new car-handling building on Auckland’s waterfront. This unique garden system was invented by the New Zealand company Hanging Gardens, and the components are manufactured as part of a department of corrections prisoner rehabilitation programme.
Around 3,800 plants were used in the installation. The five-storey car handling facility creates more capacity for the Ports of Auckland, which handle up to 300,000 cars and over a million t of heavy vehicles and project cargo a year through Bledisloe Terminal, Captain Cook and Marsden wharves. The project is due to be finished in the second half of 2020. (mw)
