Grangemouth enhances rail facility

The Scottish port of Grangemouth is extending its railfreight offering to cement its position as the key strategic freight and export/import hub for Scotland.

The GBP 3 million (EUR 3.3 million) investment will significantly scale up and modernise the port’s current rail capacity to create an extended dual rail siding of 775 m – currently 200 m – capable of handling the longest freight trains on the UK network.

When operational, Grangemouth’s will be the first railfreight terminal to offer this service and provide enhanced container / domestic intermodal options particularly for customers in the food, drink and perishables sectors in the Scottish freight community.

Construction of the new rail extension starts this month and is expected to welcome its first train in January 2021. (ben)
