Gotthard to reopen for goods trains tomorrow

Good news for the transport sector: from tomorrow, Wednesday 23 August, around 90 goods trains per day are expected to run through the Swiss base tunnel again, plus around 20 trains via the old mountain route.

To ensure that all goods can be transported, however, some goods trains will still have to be diverted via the Lötschberg-Simplon axis and via the Brenner route, the SBB said. Initially, transit trains parked at in Switzerland and abroad will run on the Swiss north-south axis, the Swiss Federal Railways continued.

Meanwhile, clean-up work in the tunnel is underway. On 10 August, a goods train derailed in the Gotthard base tunnel and severely damaged the tunnel infrastructure. Since then, the tunnel has been closed to train traffic. The derailment was probably caused by a broken wheel. (ben)
