Flying live lobsters boosts cargo business in Halifax

Seafood from Nova Scotia accounted for 11,495 t of the record 36,938 t of cargo processed at Halifax Stanfield airport (YHZ) in 2018. The overall airfreight tonnage was 8.5% higher year-on-year, and noted growth for the fifth year in succession. Air cargo exports contribute EUR 295 million to the economy of the eastern Canadian province.

Live lobster exports continue to flourish, especially in Asia and Europe, a market buoyed by the ratification of the Canada-European Union comprehensive economic and trade agreement (Ceta). Total seafood export value equates to EUR 153 million, of which EUR142 million is generated by lobster shipments.

In response to increasing global demand for Nova Scotia exports, YHZ will begin construction of a new air cargo logistics park this year. The facility should open in late 2020/early 2021. (ah)
