First maritime container terminal in Michigan

At the beginning of April 2023, the port of Monroe welcomed Gretchen Witmer, governor of the state of Michigan, to a tour and a press conference. She was the first state governor to visit a port in Michigan in an official capacity.

At this occasion, the port announced its plans for investments in new infrastructure. The programme named "Michigan Maritime Gateway" is designed to turn the port of Monroe into the first maritime container terminal in the state of Michigan. It is to join Cleveland, Ohio and Duluth, Minnesota as the only ports on the Great Lakes capable of handling international containers.

Michigan Maritime Gateway will give importers and exporters access to international markets through the St. Lawrence Seaway. This will also increase the export of wind energy components manufactured by port partner Ventower Industries. (lh)
