EUR 1 billion for Maasvlakte II

The partnership's been inked. The port of Rotterdam and APM Terminals have agreed on an investment of more than EUR 1 billion. The joint project is to extend the Maasvlakte II container terminal, covering a site of approximately 475,000 sqm, with 1,000 m of deepsea quays.

The port of Rotterdam Authority will construct the new quay walls, which are due to be completed by mid-2024. The expansion will increase the terminal's capacity by approximately 2 million teu. The new section is expected to be operational in the second half of 2026.

APM Terminals began operations at Maasvlakte II in 2015, with an automated facility without carbon emissions. The additional section of the terminal will also operate with net-zero emissions, be fully automated and prepared for shore power installation.

In addition to the new terminal site, an empty depot covering around 160,000 sqm will also be built for Star Container Services, another affiliate of A.P. Moller-Maersk.

In 2022, 185,000 sqm of land in the same area were already leased to the Danis company to develop cross-docking and cold-storage facilities that will open in the course of 2024. (cd)
