EMA counts on shipping for shopping

East Midlands Airport (EMA) is improving its infrastructure to handle aircraft more efficiently at busy times. Fedex/TNT, UPS, Royal Mail already use the east apron at the M1 motorway end of the airfield. The apron is now being widened to allow up to four more aircraft to be parked at any one time.

Also at the east side of the airport, UPS’s new facility, a GBP 114 million development, which is doubling the size of the company's local operation, is taking shape.

Managing director Karen Smart: "As the UK's second largest cargo airport after Heathrow and the UK's No.1 for dedicated air cargo traffic, we are an important national asset. Each year an estimated GBP 50 billion of UK imports and exports are handled at EMA. Much of that cargo is serviced by express operators who offer a next-day service to destinations across the world."
