"Eco Savona" christened

The port of Savona has just witnessed the christening of the vessel “Eco Savona”. This is the fourth hybrid ro-ro unit of the most recent GG5G (Grimaldi Green 5th Generation) vessel class to be ordered by Naples-headquartered Grimaldi Group. The ship's inaugural call in the port of Savona provided the occasion, after the unit had arrived from the Chinese Jinling shipyard in Nanjing.

The ceremony was opened by Ilaria Caprioglio, mayor of Savona and godmother of the vessel, who took over the cutting of the ribbon and the traditional breaking of the bottle.

With a transport capacity of over 500 trailers, this new vessel generation halves CO2 emissions compared to the Grimaldi Group’ previous generation of ro-ro ships.

At berth, CO2 emissions are even cut to zero with the vessels using electrical energy stored by mega lithium batteries with a total power of 5 MWh. The batteries are recharged on the sea journey thanks to shaft generators and 350 sqm of solar panels.

The GG5G vessels are also powered by electronically-controlled engines and feature an exhaust gas cleaning system to reduce sulphur and particulate emissions. (cd)
