E-trucks have the edge over H2 trucks

In a recent analysis, the Fraunhofer ISI institute assumes that battery-electric drives will also become the norm for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Fuel cells are still a niche option. The decisive factor for switching to battery-electric vehicles is their energy cost advantage over hydrogen and diesel.

These ISI findings confirm the strategy chosen by the commercial vehicle group Tranton with its Scania, Man, Volkswagen, Navistar and Rio brands. The group is clearly focusing on the battery-electric drive. The advantage: with the e-truck, three-fourths of the initial energy flows into the drive, with the hydrogen truck it is only about a quarter, Traton says. (ben)
