DPW cranes taller than ‘Big Ben’
DP World is set to invest GBP 60 million in four new quay cranes for its Southampton container terminal.
The company stated that these will be the largest quay cranes in Europe and will feature quad-lift technology, enabling the simultaneous movement of two 40 ft containers, increasing operational efficiency for large vessels. Each crane weighs more than 2,000 t and is taller than ‘Big Ben’. The cranes are set to arrive from mid-2026 onwards.
Designed to serve 24,000 teu mega-ships and with an operational lifespan of around 25 years, they will strengthen DP World Southampton’s handling capacity. Aart Hille Ris Lambers, DP World UK’s vice-president for commercial, port and terminal activities, highlighted the strategic importance of this investment. “We’re continually innovating and investing to enhance our operations to provide our customers with smooth and efficient services.” (js)
