Donsin Airport: back to square one

The new leadership of Burkina Faso, which had just swept to power after a military coup, granted the concession for the construction and operation of the new Donsin airport in the country’s capital Ouagadougou to the French company Meridiam almost ten months ago.

The transitional government has now reversed the decision, on the grounds that it has identified several "errors" in the agreement, including that the concession period of 30 years was disproportionate to the contribution made by the private partner.

"Furthermore, the financial model does not guarantee the sustainability of the sovereign structure of civil aviation," transport minister Roland Somda said in Ouagadougou. He added that the government is currently exploring creditable alternatives with other partners to find a financing model that preserves state interests. (ah)
