Developing ammonia as a hydrogen carrier

The Norwegian government has provided funds of EUR 5.9 million for the technology group Wärtsilä and Höegh LNG, but also other partners, such as the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) or the University of South-East Norway, for the development of ammonia as hydrogen carrier. This is part of Norway’s green platform programme of initiatives and amounts to approximate 50% of the total budget for the joint project.

As hydrogen is emerging as a viable future fuel, it is hope that this green approach will result in significant reductions of emissions when the energy is used.

For Erik Nyheim, CEO and president of Höegh LNG, “new and innovative solutions will need to be developed and we look forward to working together to ensure we remain at the forefront of the energy transition.” (lh)
