Covid-19 crisis hits the railway industry very hard
Since April 2020, the negative impact of the corona pandemic on Europe’s railfreight industry has increased. Operators report downturns of between 20% and 35%, and car transport services have completely ground to a halt.
In a study, the German consultancy company SCI Verkehr has explored various possible short-term and medium-term scenarios.
Result: if there is another lockdown in the autumn – the most probable scenario according to the study – Europe’s railfreight industry is likely to face a 10% slump in 2020. The authors of the study expect the industry to regain pre-crisis levels the earliest by 2023/2024. (ben)
