CN, not CPR, will combine with KCS

Canadian National Railway (CN) and Kansas City Southern (KSU) have entered into a definitive USD 33.6 billion merger agreement to create the premier railway. The agreement was unanimously approved by both companies’ boards of directors.

This combination of the two railways’ network will create an express route that connects the USA, Mexico and Canada with a seamless single-owner and single-operator service.

The Surface Transportation Board STD and other regulatory authorities still have to approve CN’s control of KCS. The completion of the transaction is expected to take place in the second half of 2022.

Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) was also interested in a takeover, but has now lost the race for KCS. (ben)
