CEP industry reaches pre-Corona level

The courier, express and parcel industry (CEP) continued to expand in 2022. Despite global economic and political imponderables and uncertainties, parcel services delivered 4.15 billion shipments in Germany in 2022, as the latest CEP study by the German federal association of parcel and express logistics (Biek) shows.

However, the growth rates in the CEP market were not as strong as in recent years. Compared to the high starting level in 2021, the market retracted slightly in 2022 (-7.9%) but remained significantly above the pre-Corona level with a plus of 14%. The year-on-year decline must thus be seen in comparison with the exceptional figures of the pandemic.

The long-term upward trend of the CEP market since 2012 is likely to endure in the medium term despite the current setback, Biek’s study concludes. In 2022, around 257,800 people worked directly in the CEP sector, around 8,200 fewer than in the previous year.

Yet, with an increase of 13,200 employees, the employment level here was also significantly above the pre-Corona level. Until 2027, the authors of the study expect an average annual growth in the volume of consignments of 3.3 % to almost 4.9 billion. (ben) www.biek.de
