Ceneri tunnel officially opened

Today, Friday 04.09.2020, the Ceneri base tunnel in the canton of Ticino (Switzerland) is officially opened in the presence of federal president and transport minister Simonetta Sommaruga and foreign minister Ignazio Cassis. The Ceneri base tunnel is the third and last piece of Switzerland's rail project Neat.

With the new tunnels (Lötschberg, Gotthard, Ceneri), which were built during the last 20 years, the rail network now has a continuous flat link through Switzerland. For railfreight between Rotterdam and Genoa, the realisation of the Ceneri tunnel is a clear improvement.

The federal Swiss railways SBB will send up to 5,000 trains with freight and passengers through the Ceneri tunnel over the next few weeks. These trial runs are the last "dress rehearsal" before the tunnel is officially integrated into the rail network in mid-December. (mw)
