Augmenting in Alberta

The Canadian railway and terminal operator Cando Rail is investing in its terminal in Sturgeon AB. The intermodal hub in the west of the country is set to be modernised and simultaneously have its capacity doubled.

The Sturgeon rail terminal is located at the centre of a large industrial area in the Canadian province of Alberta. The hub plays an important role in freight transport between the east and west coasts, as well as transport on the rail corridor to and from the deepsea port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia, on the Pacific coast of the vast country.

A rail-centric node

For the expansion, Cando Rail has acquired a plot of land covering around 80,000 m2 in the immediate neighbourhood of the existing terminal. The planned investment of CAD 200 million (EUR 134 million) will double the area of the hub and develop the terminal into a large modern rail-centric supply chain facility. The centre is already the largest railway terminal in Canada today.

Also set up for long trains

Thanks to this expansion Cando Rail will be able to handle 3,650 m blocktrains in Sturgeon in future. Capacities will be increased to more than 2,650 parking slots for rail wagons.

No less than 2,500 of these slots will be located in the newly-built hall, with another 1,150 slots available on the sidings. Construction is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2025.

40 yards in NA

The main tenant in the expanded terminal will be the chemical firm Dow. In addition to the Sturgeon facility Cando Rail owns and operates twelve more rail hubs and 40 marshalling yards all across North America.
