Antwerp terminal earmarked for renovation

Nine long years lie ahead. The port of Antwerp-Bruges and PSA Antwerp have agreed on the comprehensive renewal of the quayside and facilities at the Europa Terminal. The work will be carried out in three phases and make the terminal fit for the latest generation of ultra-large container vessels.

Environmental measures are part of the package. The Europa Terminal was inaugurated in 1990 as the first tidal container hub in Antwerp. This latest investment of EUR 335 million, has been designed to strengthen the ability to compete of the port of Antwerp-Bruges, the second-ranked gateway in terms of throughput in Europe’s north range.

The draught of vessels that can moor at the 1,200 m quay will be increased from 13.5 to 16 m. In addition, electrification and other optimisations will reduce CO2 emissions per container by 50%, and wind turbines will increase the share of renewable energy. (sh)
