Anemoi rotor sails cut fuel and emissions

The installation of rotor sails on the 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier, TR Lady, was completed in June 2023, marking a collaboration between Tufton Investment Management, Anemoi Marine Technologies and Cargill.

Equipped with three 5x24 m Rotor Sails, TR Lady harnesses wind power for propulsion, taking advantage of the Magnus effect. This innovative technology is anticipated to save around 10% of fuel and emissions annually.

The sails were retrofitted using Anemoi's deployment system, allowing uninterrupted cargo operations. Positive initial performance results on the vessel's maiden voyage from China to Australia exceeded expectations, showcasing wind propulsion's potential for decarbonisation in shipping.

The retrofit project has been nominated for the 'Retrofit Project of the Year' award at the Annual Marine Propulsion Decarbonisation Awards 2023. (pb)
