An industry facing great changes

In conversation with Elif Çetinkaya, general manager of LAM’s airfreight division. In the run-up to Iata’s World Cargo Symposium in Dubai (UAE), ITJ editor-in-chief Andreas Haug spoke to Elif Çetinkaya, who’s worked for Turkey’s Lyonel A. Makzume Group of Companies for twelve years. She analysed some of the sector’s challenges and market trends and talked about LAM’s strategic priorities.

Ms Çetinkaya, what was your path to your current position?

I started my career in logistics with a strong passion for international trade. Over time I gained experience in different areas of forwarding before I specialised in airfreight solutions. The fast-paced nature of this industry, along with its crucial role in global trade, attracted me. My path through the air cargo sector has been shaped by my hands-on experience, continuous learning and my drive to continuously optimise operations and customer services.

What are your responsibilities as general manager of the airfreight division at LAM Türkiye?

I oversee strategic planning, operational efficiency and customer relations. My main responsibilities include managing airfreight operations, optimising supply chain solutions and ensuring compliance with international regulations.

Some of our key objectives for the division include expanding our global reach, enhancing service reliability and adopting innovative technologies to improve efficiency.

How do you think the market is developing?

The airfreight market has evolved significantly in recent years, driven by e-commerce growth, disruptions to supply chains and shifting trade policies. We’ve observed increased demand for faster and more flexible logistics solutions. Additionally, there is a strong focus on sustainability, with services providers and customers seeking greener logistics options.

What challenges do you see, and what solutions?

One of the biggest challenges in airfreight today is managing capacity in the face of seasonal demand. Additionally, geopolitical uncertainties have an impact on pricing and operations. At LAM Türkiye we address these challenges by optimising route planning and maintaining strong partnerships with services providers, to secure reliable capacity and implement effective cost-control measures.

What role can technological innovation play?

Technology plays a crucial role in our daily operations. We utilise advanced tracking systems, artificial intelligence and automation to improve efficiency in our operations. LAM Türkiye continuously invests in digital solutions to ensure sustainable and streamlined processes.

How will these developments affect the future of airfreight?

The future of the industry will be shaped by sustainability and digital transformation. We expect to see further developments in alternative routes, as well as cost-efficient logistics management solutions.

What impact does this have on customers’ expectations?

Expectations in airfreight have changed significantly of late, with a growing demand for faster deliveries, real-time tracking and tracing, and sustainable solutions. At LAM Türkiye we prioritise service quality by investing in digital tools, optimising transit times and providing personalised solutions to meet customer needs.

Tell us a little more about LAM’s networks.

International partnerships are crucial for LAM Türkiye to maintain our global presence. Our collaborative efforts together with leading airlines and global partners allow us to offer competitive and reliable services, ensuring flexible and cost-effective solutions for our customers.

How do you think the recent geopolitical upheavals have affected the business?

Geopolitical factors and economic uncertainties have a great impact on the airfreight industry – they affect trade routes, fuel costs and regulations, amongst many other things. LAM Türkiye actively monitors global developments and adapts its strategies by adjusting transport options, strengthening local partnerships and leveraging risk management strategies to ensure operational continuity.
