An easier way to calculate emission costs

UECC, a European ro-ro carrier, has introduced a standardised method for calculating emission costs for its customers to comply with the requirements of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which will also apply to the maritime sector from 1 January 2024.

This system requires companies to acquire EU emission allowances corresponding to the CO2 emissions they generate. To give its customers a clearer overview of the costs arising from this regulation, UECC has adopted a calculation formula based on the established method of the Association of European Vehicle Logistics and the Smart Freight Centre, which also incorporates ISO standards.

The aim is to enable a transparent and fair calculation of emission costs, thus avoiding inflated expenses and an unjust distribution of burdens. UECC has already invested in more eco-friendly vessels to reduce carbon intensity and thus lower the cost burden for customers under the EU ETS. (pb)
