Ammonia fuel study initiated

Fundación Valenciaport is conducting a study on the safety of using ammonia as fuel for ships. This initiative, co-funded by the European maritime safety agency (Emsa) with a budget of EUR 450,000, aims to create a framework for the harmonised use of ammonia as bunker fuel in the port logistics sector.

The study will provide methodologies, safety assessments, and technical guidance documents. It will also include a safety assessment and reliability analysis of specific equipment and ship types, along with the development of guidelines for ammonia-fuelled ships.

Led by Abs Hellenics, the project will run until June 2025 and involve collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens. Fundación Valenciaport will contribute its expertise from previous projects involving alternative fuels like hydrogen and e-methanol, as well as its experience with ammonia as cargo in the port of Sagunto.
