Accelerating freight traffic

After two years of construction and several months of test runs, the new EUR 171 million container terminal Mega Hub Lehrte has now opened its doors. The facility loads containers in record time within just a few minutes.

All in all, the terminal assembles up to 13 freight trains per day. This equals around 250,000 truck journeys and saves 120,000 t of CO2 per year.

With innovative technology, video gates register the cargo on the trains and trucks as soon as they enter the 120,000 sqm area. Three 20 m high cranes and twelve autonomous, electrically powered transporters sort the containers for the freight trains. A central computer steers the loading and reloading of the containers.  (ben)
