ABB to propel Samskip's hydrogen ships

ABB has been chosen to provide power, propulsion, and automation systems for two new container vessels operated by Samskip Group, as part of its strategy to use hydrogen fuel cells as a clean and renewable energy source.

Under the contract, ABB will supply a complete power distribution system for these ships, incorporating hydrogen fuel cells and ABB's energy storage and automation technology. Each vessel will be equipped with a 3.2 MW hydrogen fuel cell, alongside diesel generators for backup power.

These 135 m ships, constructed by Cochin Shipyard, India's largest shipbuilding and maintenance facility, are scheduled for delivery in the third and fourth quarters of 2025. They will primarily operate between Oslo Fjord and Rotterdam, covering a distance of about 700 nautical miles.

Samskip aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, and these vessels are expected to cut approximately 25,000 t of CO2 emissions annually. This project aligns with the greenhouse gas reduction strategy of the International Maritime Organisation. (pb)
