A merger for sustainable packaging

As of 12 September 2023, Smurfit Kappa and Westrock, two packaging companies, have announced their collaboration on new sustainable packaging. Through this merger, the two groups will be combined into a new holdings company called Smurfit Westrock.

Smurfit Kappa has been active in Europe, while Westrock has focused mainly on the Americas. The new company will now have around 100’000 employees in 42 countries. Smurfit Westrock will have geographic and product diversity, focusing on making corrugated and consumer packaging sustainable.

For this, the company will use bio-degradable or paper-based solutions. As of 30 June 2023, Smurfit Kappa and Westrock together generated a combined adjusted twelve months’ revenue of approximately USD 34 billion, which would make Smurfit Westrock the largest listed global packaging partner by revenue.
