A contract to reach net zero goal

Netherlands-based Samskip Group has signed a ship building contract with India’s Cochin Shipyard (CSL) for two hydrogen fuel powered vessels.

Samskip Group wants to go into “zero carbon emission free shipping services” and is pursuing the “goal of reaching net-zero by 2040,” CEO Kari-Pekka Laaksonen says.

Each of the vessels will achieve around 25,000 t of CO2 reduction per year and will be among the first zero emission short sea container vessels in the world using green hydrogen as the fuel. Already a partner in the Norwegian government’s green funding programme, Samskip Group “looks forward to a successful cooperation” with CSL. (lh)
