24,000 teu nuclear ship unveiled
China's Jiangnan Shipyard introduced the world's largest nuclear-powered containership at the Marintec China 2023 trade fair in Shanghai recently.
With a 24,000 teu capacity, this design features advanced molten salt reactors, enhancing safety and efficiency. Its propulsion system includes dual motors, propellers and rudders, powered primarily by a supercritical carbon-dioxide generator.
The modular nuclear power system delivers high efficiency and net-zero emissions, presenting a shorter, more spacious and energy-efficient alternative to conventional ships.
DNV has granted preliminary approval for this innovative design, marking a significant step in the maritime industry's pursuit of near-zero emission solutions. (pb)
