Weapons or POWs? Shot down or accident?
Uncertainty surrounding a Russian Air Force Il-76 that crashed yesterday, 24 January 2024, in the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine and was completely destroyed: Russia spoke of an "act of terrorism by Ukraine", which had shot down the military transport plane allegedly carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war on its way to an exchange with Russian POWs held by the Ukraine.
Ukrainian media initially also reported a shoot-down - a statement that was later revised. Nine other people - just three supervisors in addition to six crew members - are said to have been on board. Ukrainian military sources, however, claimed that the aircraft was carrying S-300 missiles. (ah)
