Volatile transport volumes in Europe

The uncertainties regarding the development of the corona crisis led to a rapid increase in freight offers on the transport market. "Many companies submitted their orders in advance to be prepared for the expected border closures and other restrictions caused by the Covid-19 outbreak," says Tilman Fecke, business analyst at Timocom, as he comments the unusually high rise in freight offers that were placed on this European freight exchange until mid-March.

Timocom thus noted a 16% increase in freight offers in Q1/2020 compared to the same period last year; transport volumes from EU countries to Italy rose by 26%, deliveries to Poland climbed by as much as 53%. Refrigerated trucks were in particularly high demand.

At its peak, demand for temperature-controlled transports was 50% above the volumes of the previous year, the freight exchange operator reports. In mid-March things changed dramatically and delivery volumes plummeted. "Despite an increase in transports in the food sector, the amount of freight was reduced by more than two thirds from the middle to the end of March, all across Europe," Fecke adds.

Launched in 2009, Timocom's transport barometer analyses the development of supply and demand for transports. Around 130,000 users generate up to 750,000 international cargo space and freight offers per day. (mw)
