UK railways: big rise in container capacity
UK’s infrastructure manager Network Rail finished the GBP 17 million Southampton freight train lengthening project with a series of improvements on the freight lines between Southampton Central and Redbridge. The improvements unlock more capacity at the country’s second busiest container port.
Freight services between Southampton, the Midlands and the North can now carry up to 20% more goods thanks to track, signals and sidings improvements. Trains once restricted to 520 m in length can now be extended up to 775 m, or 14 extra containers per train.
The Port of Southampton’s three railfreight operators DB Cargo, GB Railfreight and Freightliner can now move tens of thousands more containers of goods every year. (ben)
