Trials for e-truck with fuel-powered range extender

The DHL Group and the heavy vehicle manufacturer Scania have jointly developed an electric truck with a fuel-powered generator.

The new lorry will be deployed for parcel transport between Berlin and Hamburg, in order to test its performance in day-to-day operations. The generator replaces one of the battery packs not needed for the majority of transport routes by a fully electric truck, thus reducing the range coming from the batteries but providing back-up energy in the above-mentioned scenario.

This vehicle could be an interim solution whilst fully electric trucks are being scaled and the concomitant charging infrastructure built, the partners said. After the tests additional vehicles are set to be added to DHL’s fleet. (ben)
